Shipping Containers for Sale in Oklahoma

Oklahoma is our nearest out-of-state market. From the Mariner Containers depot at 153 FM 1564, Greenville, TX 75402, Oklahoma City is about 223 road miles and roughly four hours; Tulsa is about 241 miles and four and a half hours. Both are closer than Houston or San Antonio, and shipping is the same flat $450 per order.

Getting there

Central and western Oklahoma is reached north through Sherman and Durant onto I-35. Eastern Oklahoma and Tulsa run up US-75 through Atoka, McAlester and Okmulgee. Both are well-used freight corridors that regularly carry oversize agricultural and energy loads, so routing is rarely the constraint. The usual limiting factor is the last mile: section-line and county roads give a tilt-bed the straight approach it wants, but unpaved sections go soft after rain and a loaded truck will not attempt a drop it cannot back out of.

What Oklahoma buys containers for

  • Farm and ranch storage. Twenty foot units dominate: feed, tack, tools, fencing materials and implements kept locked and dry, often on a quarter section with no other building.
  • Oilfield and pipeline equipment stores. A container is frequently the only secure structure on a lease, and the 40 ft high cube is the standard choice where tall kit has to go inside.
  • Construction site stores around the OKC and Tulsa growth corridors.
  • Storm-season equipment protection. A locked steel box keeps machinery out of hail and wind-driven rain, which in Oklahoma is a real and recurring cost.

Storm country: what a container can and cannot do

A shipping container is excellent hail and wind-driven rain protection for equipment. It is not a storm shelter and must not be used as one, above ground or buried. Container strength is concentrated at the corner castings; the walls are not engineered for lateral soil pressure or debris impact, and containers do not meet FEMA P-361 or ICC 500 criteria. Keep the shelter and the storage separate.

For the container itself, anchoring or ballasting an empty unit is worth doing. An empty 20 ft container weighs under 5,000 lb with a large flat side, and straight-line winds move things that size.

Oklahoma rules

There is no statewide container permit. Most unincorporated county land in Oklahoma carries no restriction on placing a storage container on private property. Incorporated cities and towns apply their own zoning ordinances, and some restrict containers in residential districts or cap how long a temporary unit may remain. Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Norman, Edmond and Broken Arrow each handle it through their own code. Check with the city or county planning office, and check HOA covenants separately, before the container is dispatched. Anything occupied, plumbed or wired is a building and needs a permit wherever it sits.

Site preparation

Set the container on concrete blocks, railroad ties or a compacted gravel pad under the four corner castings. That keeps it level so the doors keep sealing, keeps the floor edge out of standing water, and lets the frame rather than the floor carry the load. Check the approach gives roughly 60 ft of straight, level run for a 20 ft unit or 100 ft for a 40 ft, with about 12 ft of width and 15 ft of overhead clearance.
