Description
A used 40ft open-top container has no conventional corrugated steel roof. In its place sit removable bows and a weatherproof tarpaulin secured with ropes, which means the container can be loaded from above by crane instead of fed in through the doors.
What they carry
Machinery, mostly. Anything too heavy or too awkward to walk in through a door goes in from overhead, and the door header above the cargo doors can be swung round or removed to get a load in at floor level instead. Lashing rings are fitted for securing the load in transit. If the machinery stands taller than the container walls you will need a flat rack instead, because an open top has to ship with its bows and tarpaulin in place, and they carry part of the structural load.
