Mariner Containers is a Texas business. The depot is at 153 FM 1564, Greenville, TX 75402, in Hunt County on the I-30 corridor north east of Dallas, and it is the single point every order ships from. We have been trading since 2012 and we sell across the whole state, from Metroplex job sites to Panhandle ranches and Gulf Coast industrial yards.
Road distances from the depot
| Texas city | Road miles | Approx. drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Dallas | 49 | 1 hour |
| Tyler | 75 | 1.5 hours |
| Fort Worth | 81 | 1.6 hours |
| Waco | 143 | 2.6 hours |
| Austin | 243 | 4.4 hours |
| Houston | 282 | 5 hours |
| San Antonio | 321 | 5.8 hours |
| Lubbock | 394 | 6.9 hours |
| Amarillo | 396 | 7.3 hours |
| Corpus Christi | 438 | 8 hours |
| El Paso | 684 | 11.6 hours |
Everything east of I-35 and most of central Texas is a single driver day. West Texas and the Panhandle are longer runs and the delivery window is correspondingly wider, but the flat $450 shipping rate does not change with distance, which is worth knowing if you are in El Paso or Amarillo and used to being quoted by the mile.
Hauling a container legally in Texas
Texas sets the standard legal vehicle height at 14 feet and the standard legal width at 8 feet 6 inches. A shipping container is exactly 8 ft wide, so width is never the issue. Height can be. A standard container is 8 ft 6 in tall and sits comfortably inside the limit on a tilt-bed. A high cube is 9 ft 6 in, and on a trailer deck that puts the top of the box close to the 14 ft ceiling. In practice that means the route has to be surveyed for low bridges, canopies, drive-through structures and overhanging branches, and it is the single most common reason a high cube delivery has to be re-routed.
Choosing a size for a Texas site
- 10 ft and 12 ft: about 70 to 90 sq ft. Yard stores, tight urban lots, alley access, rooftop and courtyard storage.
- 20 ft: about 146 sq ft. The default. Fits most sites, takes a garage-load of tools, stock or equipment, and needs only about 60 ft of approach.
- 30 ft: an uncommon middle size, useful where 20 ft is not enough and a 40 ft will not place.
- 40 ft: about 304 sq ft. Pallet storage, bulk inventory, workshops. Needs roughly 100 ft of straight, level approach.
- High cube: one foot taller externally, about 8 ft 10 in internally. Specify it for stacked pallets, tall plant, or any conversion where floor build-up and insulation will eat the headroom.
Shop by size: 10 ft, 12 ft, 20 ft, 30 ft, 40 ft. Or by type: refrigerated, modified, cabins.
Permits: how it actually works in Texas
There is no statewide shipping container permit and no state agency that approves container placement. The decision is local and it comes from three separate places, any of which can stop you:
- City or county zoning. Incorporated cities apply their own ordinances, and rules differ between residential, commercial and industrial districts. Unincorporated county land is generally the most permissive, and in much of rural Texas there is no restriction at all on a storage container on private property.
- Building code. A container used purely as a locked store is usually an accessory structure. A container that is occupied, connected to utilities, or fixed to a permanent foundation is a building, needs a permit and engineered plans, and is inspected against the adopted codes.
- HOA covenants and deed restrictions. Private, enforceable, and in Texas suburbs frequently stricter than the city code. Houston in particular has no zoning ordinance but relies heavily on deed restrictions.
We can tell you what is normally required. The permitting decision is the buyer’s responsibility, and it should be settled before a container is loaded.

Texas: common questions
Where in Texas does Mariner Containers deliver?
Anywhere in the state. The depot sits at 153 FM 1564, Greenville, TX 75402, on the I-30 corridor north east of Dallas. Dallas is about 50 road miles away, Fort Worth 81, Tyler 75, Waco 143, Austin 243, Houston 282, San Antonio 321, Lubbock 394 and El Paso 684.
What is the legal height limit for hauling a container in Texas?
Texas sets the standard legal vehicle height at 14 feet and the standard legal width at 8 feet 6 inches. A 9 ft 6 in high cube sitting on a tilt-bed deck comes close to that 14 ft ceiling, which is why the route has to be clear of low bridges, canopies and overhanging branches. A standard 8 ft 6 in container has more margin.
Do Texas cities require a permit for a shipping container?
There is no statewide container permit. It is decided city by city and county by county through zoning and building codes, and by HOA or deed restrictions on the property itself. Unincorporated county land is usually the most permissive. Anything occupied, plumbed or wired is treated as a building and needs a permit.
